Mainstreaming Human Rights and Cross-cutting Issues in the Agricultural and Natural Resource Sectors in Kenya-Phase II

KENAFF is implementing phase two of mainstreaming Human Right Based Approach and cross-cutting issues in the agricultural and natural resource sector in Kenya. The Human Rights Based Approach is supported by Embassy of Finland. The Programme covers a period of 1 year and it seeks to empower farmers through mainstreaming rights-based approach in KENAFF and its affiliate farmer organizations. This intervention seeks to identify and effectively package the relevant human rights concerns affecting the resource poor smallholder farming communities in Kenya.

Human rights based approach to development (HRBA) means that everyone, including the poorest and most marginalized people are able to enjoy the rights that have been recorded in international human rights agreements.

Scope

The project will therefore be implemented in Bomet, Busia,Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Homabay, Kakamega,Kirinyaga,Kisii,Kwale, Meru, Muranga, Nakuru, Nandi,Narok, Siaya, >Tana River, Trans Nzoia, Uasin gishu and West Pokot.

Main objective

To out-scale the lessons learned and promote adoption of human rights based functions within the agricultural sector/among the smallholder farmers.

  • To increase awareness of members on human right based approach with a focus to agriculture.
  • To empower the Federation membership to participate in the dialogue process.
  • To promote realization and adoption of rights based function among the key players.
  • To enhance participation of smallholder farmers and key players in human rights based moderation process.

Activities

  • Train and capacity building on rights based approaches to the main federation actors.
  • Package the human Right concerns affecting the Agriculture sector appropriately.
  • Integration of the rights based perspectives in the federations planned interventions.
  • Build the capacity for recognition of rights violation and redress.

 

Output

  • Members aware of right based approach
  • Agriculture sector specific human rights concerns in Kenya appropriately packaged.
  • Rights violation cases are packaged.
  • Solutions to human rights violations identified. 
  • Sensitization and awareness creation materials produced, distributed in 18 Counties and information disseminated to agricultural communities.
  • Agricultural communities aware on sectoral rights based approaches actualized.
  • A report enlisting all actors produced.
  • Engagement strategy with the actors developed and popularized.
