Kenya Horticultural competitive programme (KHCP)

The programme covers a period of 3 years from April 2011 to March 2014. Its supported by USIAD/FINTRAC.

Scope

It covers three counties that is Bomet, Meru and Uasin Gishu.

Objective

 To increase small holder farmer’s income through intervention at multiple level of potato value chain including training gaps, seed production, storage e, post harvest handling, farm to market linkage and product certification.

Expected Out Put

  • Set up 27 on-farm demonstrations with smallholders Development of 27 Irish potato collection and storage sites in the growing areas to ensure proper post-harvest handling.
  • Irish potato productivity increased by at least 10% at the demonstration sites.
  • Improved linkage between different actors within the value chain. Through clearly defined roles of farmers, intermediaries, and the market.
  • Nine workshops for leadership training on organizational capacity and business skills.
  • 4,500 small holders adopt new farming technologies.
  • 19 new clean seed potato multiplication sites established.
  • Two technical publications on production and post-harvest technology completed.
  • Nine traders on Irish potato processed products trained and at least four products achieve KEBS certification.
  • 27 fresh Irish potatoes traders trained on post-harvest handling
  • 50 farmers trained on clean seed production;
  • 81 lead farmers trained on potato GAP .These farmers will become focal points for training of other farmers in the counties.
