Youthful farmer reaps the benefits of passion fruit farming

Mr Henry Kosgei is a youthful farmer from Kipnyigei Youth group in Trans Nzoia County, cultivating 0.25 acre of passion fruit orchard with 140 vines which he established in the year 2014. Before he became a beneficiary of the USAID KAVES training, the farmer was entirely practicing conventional farming method in his orchard. The major challenges the farmer was experiencing were in the production cycle of passion fruit. i.e high incidence of pest and diseases , severe drought  and low productivity.

In 2015 Mr Henry Kosgei farmer group participated in a training on agronomic practices (GAP, minimum pruning, ultra high density, use of Bio pesticides (Tricoderma) ,Bio fertilizer (Belsap) through the support of USIAD KAVES.  As a result there has been increased productivity per unit area, increase of vines population per unit area, use of guard rows and appropriate stick traps in aiming to reduce pest and diseases prevalence etc.  As a result of using the Bellsap (which helps to trap and regulate moisture) he wisely overcame the drought that most farmers experienced during the month of Dec – March and lost their crop, but his crops were not affected.

Currently he has 400 vines in 0.3 ac   harvesting 600 - 850 kgs per month and sells @ Ksh 80 per kg which earns him over ksh 45,000 per month. This has steered him towards investing in dairy value chain and has bought a dairy cow and now constructing zero grazing unit.
